What Do Ski Instructors Do Before The Snow Comes?

Learning to ski has moved on from being told to ‘bend your knees’ and if you’ve skied with BASS, you’ll have experienced a much more collaborative approach to coaching.

The development of ski teaching is almost as dynamic as skiing itself and we enjoy the challenge of finding ways to make your next winter holiday the best one you’ve ever had.

BASS Directors represent Great Britain

Late August this summer, two of the BASS Directors, Becci Malthouse and Jaz Lamb had a trip of a lifetime representing Great Britain at the 2015 Interski Congress in Argentina.
They flew half way around the world to the southern most town any where in the world. Ushiaua, know as the town "At the End of the World", was hosting the 2015 Interski Congress. The Interski Congress happens every 4 years and is a chance for all member nations of Interski to come together, show each other what they do and present workshops. A great 'mixing pot' of international skiing.

Who trains the trainers?

In November BASS Morzine & Les Gets Director, Jaz Lamb, was in Zermatt to take the lead in delivering the Induction Training week for the new intake of BASI Trainers. BASI Trainers are the pinnacle of the profession, holding responsibility for training, educating and assessing ski instructors as they progress through the British Association of Snowsport Instructors (BASI) qualifications.
Naturally, this role carries great responsibility to ensure that standards are maintained and there is a consistency of education and core philosophies across the training department.

BASI Trainer Quality Assurance

Life is full of challenges and the road to becoming a BASI trainer was certainly one of the most demanding. Working through the BASI system in itself is a long process that involves training, gaining teaching experience and exams at each level. In fact, it was so long ago that I qualified as a fully-fledged Level 4 ISTD that the qualification was then known as Grade 1.

Passing the Baton

‘Passing the Baton’ by Emily Dormer
When I had my first lesson with BASS some ten years ago I was overcome with a sense of relief that Ski Lessons no longer had to be a source of despair and frustration. Back then, BASS worked out of a small room at the back of another company’s office and lessons began in front of a small banner at the top of the Morzine Pleney.

Free Open Days for Professional Training

There has been a rise in people taking snowsport instructor exams, whether it be starting out at BASI Level 1 or going through the BASI system to reach Level 4 ISTS to work internationally for top pay. There will be many questions aspiring instructors will have, one of the biggest decisions is where to go and what training pacage is right?
